Erin Brockovich launches initiative to track AI data centres and document community concerns

Erin Brockovich, the environmental activist whose legal case against Pacific Gas & Electric Company inspired the 2000 Oscar-winning film starring Julia Roberts, has shifted her focus to artificial intelligence infrastructure. Her new project, Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting, provides an interactive map of major AI data centres that are either operational or under construction throughout the country, along with links to news coverage of projects and community opposition efforts.
The website includes a reporting form allowing residents to submit information about data centres in their communities, whether already built, under construction, or proposed. Since its launch on April 27, the platform has received more than 3,800 reports from people concerned about the facilities. In a statement about the project, Brockovich acknowledged that while she is not opposed to AI data centres themselves, she is concerned about the lack of transparency in their development. She noted that some communities have welcomed these facilities after genuine public engagement and honest disclosure of impacts, but pointed to a troubling pattern where projects are announced after permits are already secured and developers are unresponsive to community concerns.
Residents submitting reports have documented rising utility bills, unexplained illness in animals, and concerns about long-term health and property value impacts. Brockovich emphasized that when these complaints are viewed collectively across multiple communities, they reveal a broader national pattern that warrants attention. The initiative reflects mounting resistance to AI data centres across North America, with recent opposition including protests in Vancouver and resident campaigns against proposed facilities in Utah and Alberta.
