Number of people who have tried cocaine reaches new high in Japan, study shows

The number of people in Japan who have tried cocaine reached a record high of around 350,000 in fiscal 2025, according to a survey conducted by a research group at the health ministry.According to the study by the National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry for the 12 months from April last year, around 0.4% of 3,156 respondents between the ages of 15 and 64 said they had tried cocaine before, with the center then estimating around 350,000 people nationwide to have tried it based on that figure.This is the highest estimate since the agency began taking data under the current model in 2007, highlighting the possibility that cocaine use in the country might be on the rise.
