In a five-page missive posted on social media Wednesday, López Obrador claimed that Trump has transformed significantly compared to when the two leaders dealt with each other previously. During that earlier period, López Obrador described Trump as cooperative, pragmatic, and willing to engage in dialogue. The former Mexican president attributed this alleged change to negative influences, stating that "false friends and advisers, both internal and external" have steered Trump toward problematic actions.

López Obrador's comments represent a notable intervention in current US-Mexico relations at a time of growing tensions between the two nations. His remarks offer strong backing for the current Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, whom he has publicly praised as "the best president Mexico has had in our time." Although López Obrador holds no official position since leaving office in 2024, he maintains considerable political influence within Mexico.

The former president singled out the Justice Department's April indictment of ten Mexican officials on alleged drug trafficking charges as a source of friction. He further contended that US authorities have sought to undermine his Morena political party under the pretext of addressing migration and narco-terrorism concerns. López Obrador concluded his statement by expressing hope that "the other Trump" would return, referencing the president he once found more amenable to cooperation.
