Israel, Lebanon agree to renew ceasefire; create Lebanese security zones
The agreement was announced through a joint statement after the fourth round of negotiations mediated by the United States. Under the accord, the ceasefire is contingent upon a complete halt to Hezbollah fire and the withdrawal of all Hezbollah operatives from areas south of the Litani River. The Lebanese army would assume full control of the designated security zones, although specific details regarding implementation were not immediately disclosed.
Both nations emphasized in their statement that "these steps will enable progress towards a comprehensive peace and security agreement." The agreement also stressed that the future relationship between Israel and Lebanon must be determined exclusively by their sovereign governments, explicitly rejecting any attempts by state or non-state actors to influence Lebanon's political trajectory.
The statement appeared to address Iranian involvement, as Tehran backs Hezbollah and has previously argued that Israeli military operations against Lebanon must cease as part of broader regional negotiations with the United States. Notably, Hezbollah was not participating in the direct Israel-Lebanon negotiations.
